ArtivistGM The Peterloo/Amritsar Parallel.
I’m proud to be one of ten creatives commissioned by Manchester Histories to draw inspiration from Archives Plus in response to the 200 year anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre and its accompanying themes of hope, protest, democracy, freedom of speech. The project is called ArtivistGM and I’ll be creating music, performing at ‘From The Crowd’ at Manchester Central and using protest art through fabrics with logo Design & development with Typography Art specialist Dave Kirkwood.
I’m a Mancunian particularly interested in both my Mancunian and Punjabi heritage as well as influences of cross culture past and present. I firmly believe that music, audio and visual art are great media to draw interest from, not only the adult public but from the younger generation too.
The themes of Protest, Democracy and Freedom of Speech are of special interest to me in my current work and I eventually wish to combine the essence and sonic capabilities of the Peterloo Massacre archives & cross media archives. My eventual aim is to draw parallels to the Amritsar Massacre and explore commonalities between the plight of the two communities. In doing so maybe bring some cohesion between them and hopefully generate interest in the Peterloo Archives without alienating the South Asian communities.
